Films are coming to Alton Assembly Rooms on Sunday evenings.

Dementia-friendly Alton is working with film enthusiasts to screen fortnightly movies for all.

The first is Oppenheimer (15), showing at 7pm on April 21. Tickets cost £6.

This is followed by best original screenplay Oscar winner Anatomy of a Fall (15) at 7pm on May 5.

A new projector and sound system will screen films in the main hall for various visitors thanks to an Abri Community Fund grant.

Dementia-friendly Alton co-ordinator Karen Murrell said: “We are delighted to be showing films to those visiting the Assembly Rooms both on Sunday evenings and at some other times that we shall arrange for different groups.”

Tim Woolman - who supported the Save Alton Cinema campaign and was part of Experience Film, a group showing films around Alton - added: “The Assembly Rooms is a great place to share a big screen experience, thanks to Karen and the Dementia-friendly Alton volunteers.

“The Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer is a wonderful way to start. We look forward to seeing which other films people will come to enjoy here. The main hall is large enough to accommodate everyone who wishes to attend, so tickets are sold on the door. We can serve drinks and collect suggestions from 6.30pm before each film.

“We welcome volunteers to help us, particularly with publicity. The U3A is already kindly promoting the films to its members. Films are chosen which complement those scheduled at the Allen Gallery between their exhibitions, which are proving popular.”

The next Allen Gallery film is an Oscar-nominated romantic drama about two childhood friends’ reunion, Past Lives (12A), at 6.30pm for 7pm on May 11. Book at www.hampshireculture.org.uk/allen-gallery
